The Marshall Foundation has been serving Tucson communities since 1930, when Louise Foucar Marshall created the first private foundation in Arizona. Louise Foucar Marshall came to Tucson in 1898 for health reasons and in 1900, at the age of 32, became the University of Arizona’s first woman professor. She taught botany, mathematics and a host of languages including English, French, Latin, and Spanish, and by 1901 she was named head of the Department of Ancient and Modern Languages.

Starting in 1901, with the money she earned as a professor, Louise invested in land near the university. Over time, she developed it into successful residential and commercial properties. With a steady flow of income from the properties and a comfortable inheritance from her mother’s estate, Louise had the financial means to fund the start-up and ongoing operation of the Marshall Foundation. Almost 100 years later, the Marshall Foundation, through its real estate assets, primarily centered around Main Gate Square near the University of Arizona, to support meaningful philanthropic efforts like community giving and scholarships.
